Applications of Cold Forging

Cold forging is one of the most widely used chipless forming processes and usually does not require machining other than drilling. The generally accepted definition of cold forging is a block of material formed or forged at room temperature without heating the initial billet or intermediate stages.

Cold forging is becoming increasingly popular in the automotive industry for the manufacture of steering and suspension components, anti-lock brake systems, axles, drills, clutch hubs, gears, pinions, pins, pedals, intermediate shafts and sleeves.

Cold Forging vs. Hot Forging

The cold forging process is a forming process performed at room temperature, i.e., cold forging temperature. The advantage of cold forging is that the surface finish of the cold forged product is good.

Whereas, in the hot forging process, heating is required to soften the metal sheet.

The main difference between hot forging and cold forging is that the high temperature of hot forging allows the metal to have a finer and more complex shape than cold forging.
